Province of Southern Brazil (Southern)
The Southern Province includes the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina
and Paraná and helps in region of Mato Grosso (Rondônia, Mato Grosso
and Mato Grosso do Sul).
After
the restoration of the Society of Jesus the work of the Jesuits in
the south of the Brazil began at end of the year 1842, when some
Spanish priests came from Argentina. In 1848 they arrived in region
of Missões (picture), from which the Jesuits had been expelled
in 1759. In 1849 some German priests arrived in order to work with
the German immigrants, who had not had any religious services since
1824. In the South the Jesuits in the beginning worked at giving
popular missions and established parishes, schools, spirituality
and research centers, educational and pastoral centers, and retreat
houses. One must also speak of its largest work, the University Vale
do Rio dos Sinos. On December 8,1927 the Province of Southern Brazil
of the Society of Jesus officially was established.
Eastern Central Province of Brasil (Central)
The
Central Province includes the States of Rio de Janeiro, São
Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Tocantins and the Federal District.
The Jesuits of the Central Province are devoted in a particular way
to the intellectual apostolate, education, and spirituality. It is
Province of the Jesuits with the largest number of schools, this
includes also the Catholic Pontifical University (PUC) in Rio de
Janeiro and the Center of Higher Studies of Society of Jesus (CES)
in Belo Horizonte (picture). At CES both lay people and Jesuits in
formation from Brazil and also from many parts of the world study
both philosophy and theology.
