Who We Are
We
are a Religious Order founded by Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century.
Ignatius' experiences of God, later called Ignatian spirituality, characterize
the way of being a Jesuit. The foundation of this spirituality is the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, which asks us to look for and find
God's reality in all things. In that way we learn how to respect and
value the good that exists in every culture. On the other hand, this
spirituality is inserted in a particular culture where we find God and
we ask others to find God. Another important aspect of that spirituality
is that we seek to learn with others the best way of serving people.
In each country the Jesuits are divided into different geographical areas,
that are called Provinces.
In Brazil, the jesuits working in the Northeast Province are present in the states of Espírito Santo, Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Piauí and
Maranhão. Besides these states, our Province is linked to the
missionary region of the Amazon, that up to 1998 was included directly
as one of the areas of work.
