Our Mission
The
latest documents of Society of Jesus define the Jesuit's mission as
a service to faith of which the promotion of the justice is an inseparable
aspect. In other words, the preaching of the faith must address all unjust
situations. Because if it did not, it would call into question faith's
credibility.
The social reality of the Northeast of Brazil, where the Jesuits work,
is characterized by the social inequality that particularly affects the
poor, who are most of the population. Basic human rights like shelter,
work, education, and health are precarious and meager. The precariousness
of these services now is deteriorated by the reduction of public budgets
and the transfer of these functions that the State assumed from communities
and philanthropic organizations. However, the precariousness is quite
an old reality and is based on the unimportance and in a condescending
and meager way given to the problems of the poor, an instrument of submission,
dependency and not an effective humane promotion in the sense of a fairer
and more cohesive civilization.
In
that sense, the mission of Society of Jesus in the Northeast is
marked by the cross of the social injustice imposed on the Northeastern
population. Having in mind this political-social reality, the Jesuits,
in their ministries, work at the service of the poor. This service starts
with an awareness of the need for initiatives for solidarity and the promotion
of justice. In many cases the poverty situation is so overwhelming that
it is necessary to offer the help of assistance by means of social centers,
where the poor are helped in their fundamental needs, as is the case at
the Hose Social Center in Bahia or by the Pedro Arrupe School in Teresina
