The Jesuit presence in Piauí concerns
itself in the areas of education, spirituality, parish, social promotion,
pastoral vocations, and collaboration in the formation of the diocesan
seminarians.
Teresina
St.
Francis de Sales High School known as "Diocesan High School",
was founded in 1906 by the Diocese and in 1960 was given to the Jesuits
to run. It represents the academic institution of noted prominence in
the panorama of the society of
Piauí. In it as in the Colégio Vieira, in Salvador, there
are three shifts of
classes, the evening shift was recently instituted and its main focus
is literacy for adults. ial Center, the Center of Our Spirituality of
Our Lady of Grace
Piauí
is one of poorest States in Brazil. Due to that reality of poverty and
social inequality the Jesuits created in Teresina, the Pedro Arrupe Social
Center, linked to College of St. Francis de Sales. The Center renders
a service in line with the assistance and social promotion for the poor
population of the city, intending to better the situation of the poor
population. The Society of Jesus in Teresina also maintains besides the
Pedro Arrupe Soc.

Socopo
In the decade of 60's was created in Socopo,
a rural area of Teresina, the St. Alphonus Agricultural School and in
conjunction with medical and other services in order to help otherss.
The following decade with the departure of Fr.
Umberto Pietrogrande, founder of the Movement of the Promotion of Education
of the Espírito Santo (MEPES), to Piauí, also here was
begun the establishment of a similar organization, later it would become
the Foundation of Father Antonio Dante Civiero (FUNACI).
In Socopo the Jesuits develop a work of popular education in the St. Alphonus
Rodirgues School, also they work at the Parish of the Divine Holy Spirit,
where is located the Retreat House of St. Alphonus.
