Our History (20th Century)

First Vieira High School locationOn February 2, 1911, Jesuits, who were expelled of Portugal, began the Septentrional Brazilian Mission of the exiled Portuguese Province Disperses - that included States of Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará and Amazon.

In 1936 the Portuguese Mission becomes a Vice Province, dependent on Portugal and in October 30, 1938 an independent Vice Province.

On June 1, 1952 this area was cut into two with the creation of the Bahia (Bahiensis) Vice Province, headquartered in Salvador, dependent on the Veneto-Milan Province,of Italy and Septentrional (Northeast) Vice Province with headquarters in Recife.

On October 13,1983, the Vice Province of Bahia and the Septentrional were elevated to the category of Province. On May 3, 1995 the Missionary District of the Amazonian was created that comprises the states of Pará and Amazon.

On July 31, 2005, the Septentrional and Bahia Province jointed themselves again and became the Brazil Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus and Fr. Acrísio Vales Salles was invested its first Provincial.
